What is Hospice?

MEDICARE/MEDICAID BENEFIT

For individuals who are covered under Medicare and/or Medicaid, the hospice benefit is very specific and has come to reflect the "gold standard" of care. The benefit outlines the components of care that hospice will provide. The patient signs an election form indicating to Medicare/Medicaid that their care is now the responsibility of hospice. The patient may continue to receive care under their Medicare/Medicaid eligibility through traditional means for care not related to his or her terminal illness. Hospice services include nursing visits, social worker visits, hospice aides, volunteers, nutritional counseling, spiritual and bereavement care, medications and equipment. In addition, there is coverage for in-patient hospitalization should that become necessary.
